The new Ambassador Building provides housing for the Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s animals that serve as part of their on-site and outreach educational programs. This back-of-house complex features three structures: a building for indoor/outdoor animal housing, a raptor mews, and a main building that combines indoor mammal and reptile housing with veterinary care and workspaces for keepers and staff.

Critical components of the complex were specifically tailored to the needs of specialized animal care and designed in close collaboration with zoo staff. Materials for this “back-of-house” facility were selected for their durability and safety, while also being functional, cost-effective, and in keeping with the design character of the Chaffee Zoo.

Supporting the zoo’s commitment to sustainability, a photovoltaic array covers the south-facing roof. Other sustainable strategies include the use of locally sourced insulated masonry, drought-tolerant plant material, and solar tubes to illuminate interior spaces with abundant natural light.

The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is no longer just a local attraction. With new exhibits and support facilities such as the Zooplex and the Ambassador Building being developed, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo is now recognized far beyond the San Joaquin Valley as an award-winning facility dedicated to conservation, science, education, and recreation.
