Working Spaces

MIXED USE: Broadway Studios | Fresno, CA | Built

Studio space has long been in short supply for the thriving and vibrant artist community in Fresno. A local artist/developer with a passion for urban revitalization and old buildings purchased a former auto parts building with the idea of meeting the need for downtown art studios. The building of unreinforced masonry walls, open bowstring trusses, and generous skylights, located in the “Cultural Arts District” near the Fulton Mall has become a major venue for “ArtHop” a monthly open studio event. 24 studios ranging from 150 square feet to over 400 square feet have been constructed within the structure.  There are no ceilings in the studios to allow natural light from the skylights to fill each space. Corridor walls have become gallery walls and artwork of various media can be viewed by the public. The openness and layout of the popular venue encourages collaboration between artists and serves as a one-of-a-kind place to display, view, and sell the work of pioneering local artists.
