PLACES OF WORSHIP: Porterville Presbyterian Church | Porterville, CA | Unbuilt

The Presbyterian Church USA assisted the congregation with the purchase of a site for a new campus.  The congregation was meeting in a store front and the possibility of an entirely new facility required critical thinking about the connection between Presbyterian theology and the built environment. Paul Halajian worked with the Pastor and Building Committee to understand the uniqueness of this congregation and the way in which scripture should inform architecture for this specific body. Models were used as the primary presentation tool to communicate proposed architectural design solutions in group settings. The site selected was a 3.5 acre orchard. The grid of the orchard, orientation of the site, and views of the Sierra Nevada, were significant elements of the design that included a Sanctuary, two-story Classroom building, Administrative Office, and Gymnasium. The sanctuary design was driven by the notion of “Reconciliation” as one of the main themes of Presbyterian theology.
