MEDICAL: Cancer Center | Fresno, CA | Unbuilt
A local physician who specialized in cancer treatment had a vision to create a comprehensive cancer diagnostic and treatment center that would be open to all and not affiliated to a specific hospital or group. A site was selected and a program was developed that included various imaging and treatment modalities, examination rooms, procedure rooms, and medical offices. The concept design was driven by the leading edge medical technology combined with a design forward facility that would attract those in need of comprehensive treatment found at no other location. Architecture was part of the “branding” strategy and the architects were called on to develop a design concept that would have stood alone among medical facilities regionally. The design called for all modalities to be shielded and housed in a basement with a gracious light-filled lobby, examination rooms, and offices in a glass and concrete tower connected to a proposed parking structure by way of a bridge. Above grade, the program was divided into two forms: a “lozenge” shaped glass clad tower to house patient spaces and a precast concrete clad office block with horizontal south facing sun screen devices to attenuate south and west exposures.
